olivetti

I am lucky enough to have a 1970s Olivetti typewriter. It used to belong to my mother-in-law, and my fiance remembers his older brothers using it for high school. On Friday night, I discovered that amazingly, it stills works. Yesterday, I had more of a play on it. It needs a new ribbon, and typing on it is very hard on the fingers – you have to hit the keys so hard! But I love it. It even dings at the end of each line!

Whilst playing and practicing my typing (no delete, of course, which is very strange!) I wore my '70s dress and t-bar platforms, with woolly socks and my nanna cardigan; Spring feels a long way off. I need to find the right slip to wear underneath, because the combination of the (albeit very soft) polyester dress (well, it was the '70s) and wool cardigan has me shooting thunder bolts from my fingers within an hour of getting dressed. Perhaps I could harness this for the typing? However, it is not so good for the static cling on my knees, and this is something I could do without. If anyone has any tips it would be much appreciated!

Nothing can save you from the electro-fingers-of-polyester-doom! I learnt to type on a typewriter like that in high school, it's cute, but it makes me appreciate my little mac laptop so much just looking at the pictures of those clunky keys!

I have been searching for an old typewriter for ages! That one is so cute, I want to use mine to type invitations and thank-you notes to people, so I shall continue to search...

I had an old typewriter like that when I was small - I used to want to be a secretary when I grew up (how ambitious!!) and used to spend all day long typing slightly saucy business letters from Mr Snood to Mrs Simmons. I also used it for a few school projects too!

Lovely photos as always - I look at them for hours :D

I love your big socks over tights with heels look Esme dear, it's so intriguing.

Moisturiser. Seriously, it sounds ridiculous, but if you moisturise heavily before wearing a garment that causes staticky grief; there will be little (if any) lightning blasting from your fingers. i learned this the hard way, and I swear by it.

Wow, I love the retro typewriter! I'd love to have one just like that...! We used to have one when I was younger, but it stopped working years ago.

Thank you for your lovely blog,

Take care,

Bonne soirée,

Kirby: thanks – they were nice and warm. Haha don't worry, I had one too! :)

jess.: thanks very much!

skye: oh I know, especially when some mac keys need just the lightest touch. Haha, electro-fingers-of-polyester-doom! Perhaps that's why big hair was all the rage back then?!

cybill: that's the kind of thing I will use mine for. Good luck with the search!

Mila: thanks! Yeah, the colour is great, I love it too. And I haven't forgotten, I will take the pics today! :)

Miss Karen: hah that's awesome! Mr Snood! Gold. Oh, thanks!

Grant: thanks! It's like my comfy-granny look, speshly with scarf on head! Moisturiser, you say? I shall try next time for sure. Even a reduction in zappage would be a good thing. Thanks for the tip!

madeleinemiranda: thanks very much!

bronwyn: oh, thank you! :)

a cat of impossible colour: me too, even if just to look at! Thanks, the socks are my not-so-formal comfy nanna thing (can you tell?!) !!!

Rora: thanks very much!

Saorise, the Irish nymph: thanks! :)

Louise: it was a happy coincidence, but I did enjoy it! Even the colours matched, hehe!

Oh I would looooveee a type writer! And yours is such a treasure. Haha, and I hate the 'no delete' rule thought, I always get so frustrated (oh growing up in the era of the computer!). And I have to say this is one of my FAVORITE outfits from you. It's perfectly layered. And that dress reminds me a lot of the Chloe Fall 08 R/W collection. Gorgeous. And lovely post <3

Ciao ciao dear,
Marisa

I just love the socks, tights and t-bars combo on you. You pull it off so effortlessly and I love the look of the textures :)

And your typewriter looks fantastic! I love the colour and it must feel fantastic hitting the keys...ok, that sounds odd but hopefully you know what i mean!

Beautiful typewriter! I've been searching for an old antique one for so long. And that last photo is really beautiful, I love your ability to wear wholly socks with strappy heels.

oh i love old typewriters, i have a blue 60's one.
looove the shoes with the big socks!

PorcelainBlonde: thanks! And I know exactly what you mean, and it does feel cool – until a couple of minutes later, and then it's tough!

A dreamer: toy typewriter, cute! This one is definitely a novelty, in that it won't get daily use. :)

WJ: thanks very much! We know someone who has a really old, maybe Victorian one, and we're sure they don't really like it, and should give it to us! :D Good luck looking for yours, too.

Penny: that sounds really cool, I love the old colours. And thanks!
