the clothes of mad men – in real life

peggy bw single

On Wednesday I went with Joyce to see come of the Mad Men clothes in the Icons of Style exhibition at – whoa – Chadstone Shopping Centre.

Yep, I went to a shopping centre. And not just any shopping centre, but the biggest one in the Southern Hemisphere. At least it was a few years ago. I've no idea if that stat is still true and I've no interest in checking it because, well, I don't really care! Shopping centres are not my favourite things.

BUT on with the show. It was really interesting in seeing these clothes, these costumes that are so familiar to me, having watched MM up to just past halfway of the third series before running out of episodes on DVD and then running out of enthusiasm to track more down. I do like the show – and the costumes, of course! – but I think at that point in my life I had reached early 1960's fashions overload!

My favourite of the exhibition is Peggy's black and white check dress with the button details. The print might be a bit too loud/large for me but this is the kind of mid-century vintage dress that is right up my alley. I'm a sucker for button details! On the show, Joan is my favourite character, clothing wise. All the clothes were displayed on standard modern mannequins – you know, very tall, thin limbs, strange proportions, tiny heads – and they just didn't do Joan's dresses, so fabulous on Miss H, any justice. Loose on the bust and hips, it showed just how important the fit of clothing is – and the importance of people, and personalities, to make them come to life.

I didn't shoot much of the men's suits because who cares about them?! Well, that's not strictly true, of course. But on those modern mannequins, the details weren't really shown to their best advantage. Perfectly fitted suits need to fit, well, perfectly, to their wearer's body – that's the point of tailoring!A fedora here, a tie pin there, it's all just stuff without a character making it their own.

What's your favourite dress here? And who's favourite Mad Men character when it comes to clothes? Tell me! I'd love to know.

Oh wow, it's amazing that there is a Mad Men exhibition in Melbourne. I'd love to to see it too if they have it in the States. My favorite look here has to be Peggy's 2nd outfit!

Such a cool exhibition! I am not a fan of shopping centres, either, but if there was ever a reason to go to one, I think this was it.

you're so lucky! their clothes are so beautiful.

i think the poses on the mannequins were strange. too modern of a stance. it kind of threw everything off.

Yes, first to comment!
And, actually, my first comment here, though i've been reading and loving for a while now.
Wonderful exhibit, the Mad men dolls are hilarious!
I've always preferred Joan too.

Jealousy abounds! Even though you had to go to a shopping centre. I love the Mad Men clothes, especially Joan's.

How scrappy was the blue dress in real life? I was shocked! The magic of television!

Hehe I'm with you on running out of steam watching MM, loved the outfits but just not inspired enough to keep watching! Joan's dresses were my favourite - she rocked good strong colours.

I've never watched Mad Men but the clothes are still gorgeous and seeing them would be amazing! I particularly love the red vest outfit. It's just so darn cute! But the check dress with the big buttons that you love is amazing, too.

‪!Tb0n3!‬: it's pretty amazing that it got to Aus – we don't usually get much stuff like this here! Ooh, I remember seeing that one on screen and loving it, too :)

‪Annuschka‬ : :D

‪Mitzi Cocoa‬: definitely! :D

‪Q's Daydream‬ : it is weird when i think about it – I saw these on the telly hehe!

‪betty jordan wester‬: I know – they look so different! Interesting to see the difference. too :)
‪Vivian‬ : haha! Yep, Joan was AMAZING in that dress!

‪Michelle: Hello and welcome, and thank you! :D I love those dolls, too, I wish I could justify having one, ha! ‬

‪Lily‬ : haha the shopping centre was worth it! Joan seams to be very popular..!

‪Miss Tallulah Porkchop‬ : They all looked so… ordinary! I know a few people who thought the blue dress was a bit average, and even plain unflattering on the mannequin! Ah, the power of TV :)

‪Tikkitiboo + Ahka Vintage‬ : yay, it's not just me! Phew. And another vote for Joan, awesome! :D

‪MrJeffery‬: it was kind of worth the trip, I think… :)

‪LincolnTaft‬ : oh, cool! You know the funny thing is, I think it was the most plain/average one there. Lacked Joan's va-va-voom!

Oh, I love the Mad Men, I wish the exhibition would be here too and I could see all the dresses with my own eyes. I´m so jealous! ;)
From these clothes is Joan´s red pencil dress my favourite, it´s simple, elegant and red - perfect combination.

And I want Betty Draper´s doll! :D

Oh gosh, how I do love MM. I'm with you that Joan has the best wardrobe, but that blue stunner that Betty wore...oh my.
For me, MM is not just about the clothes, the decor is so very inspiring as well.

Chadstone is terrifyingly large, but I will make certain to go check this out! I had an article on it pinned to my noticeboard but somehow I thought it started in october - thank god you posted this and reminded me!

Thanks for these photos M. I went to Chaddy last night to see the exhibition. I was distinctly underwhelmed. You are right, the mannequins were totally inappropriate. But i did love the staging they used behind the clothes - they had a spectacular 50s chrome drinks trolley. It was worth going there just to see that. I came promptly home and made myself and hubby an 'Old Fashioned'! Maria x
PS The blue dress was supposed to look 'handmade' by a seamstress (I listened to all the DVD commentaries!)

What a waste to have the exhibition in a shopping centre! If it had been done at a design museum, they might have had more appropriate mannequins as well. But I guess they probably had it in the shopping centre to try and suck people in to buy Mad Men-inspired clothes from all the chain stores... When all the clever girls know where to go for proper vintage!

But, that aside, I agree with you - the black and white dress is my definite favourite. I would definitely wear that, pattern and all!

Wow that looks brilliant! Such a beautiful collection of dresses too, they're all so classy!

The black dress with the red roses is perfect!
Sometimes to see these beauties is necessary to do some efforts like for example going in a shopping center. I don't really like places full of people shopping the same tee from morning to evening.

I love Betty the most, character and clothing wise!

Ohhh they have the same exhibit in a shopping centre where I live, with different clothes of course. I think I will have to take a few photos to blog too, though this exhibit doesn't have as many dresses on display.

My favourite character used to be Betty, before season 4, but now I really adore little Sally Draper. She is cute as a button and wears the sweetest dresses :)

I despise Chaddy and only go there under extreme circumstances, Mad Men costumes counts as an extreme circumstance. I was there at 9:15 Saturday morning, before the crowds so there was no chance of people getting in my way. I spent an hour studying the display and taking photos, then the place started to make me itch and I was running for the door.

I loved seeing the clothes in real life, even if the mannequins were all THE WRONG SIZE!!!!! How could such an error be allowed happen?! And I would have liked more detail on the clothes, i.e. the fabrics used, the designer and/or inspiration for the garment. But that's only because I am a detail junkie.

I have just started watching series 4 and in episode 2 Joan wears a red dress that is spectacular. Everything we've seen her in so far just turned to beige....

January Jones has the teeny, tiniest waist! I loved seeing the clothes up close, particularly the black dress Betty wore in Italy. Stunning!
