storing shoes (with the help of a kitty)

shoes storage a

Finding a place for all my shoes has been no easy thing. I have, oh, just one or two pairs, um, maybe well a few more than that, and they need somewhere to live. A bookshelf was a great idea for a while, but I found it took up a bit too much space. I like the idea of keeping them in their boxes and having a photo on each one, but really, let's be honest, that's just never going to happen. Those fabric shoe holder hanging things don't seem to save that much space. And I'm definitely not quite at the point if keeping things in my oven. (My freezer, now, that's another story!) So, what to do with them?

They now live under my two clothes racks, where I can see them – and I can see them next to most of my clothes, too. I am terrible at getting rid of my old shoes; even when they're beyond both wear and repair, I have a habit of holding on to them for no good reason, other than as dust collectors, space cloggers and reminders of the favourite shoe-ness of them that is now no more. I need to have a good cull. I like the idea of having a smaller amount of perfect things... and then I like variety, too... it's a bit of a clash so the much-needed cull will be interesting.

And then, the actual order of things. Do I sort them by colour, by style, by season? Or do I accept that a tiny bit of chaos at this point might not be such a bad thing, and anyway, it's how I tend to like things?

Perhaps help is at hand (or foot) as Babycat has now thoroughly inspected the rows. I think she is thinking it over. Maybe she thinks I have too many. Or maybe she prefers things after she's knocked them over. Perhaps that is her organisational nirvana. Or maybe she is just as foxed as I am.

But tell me, how do you keep your shoes?

Oh. Yes, the eternal problem of my life (um, ok, in fairness, I have 90 pairs...)

So far I've found the best way to store them is by putting all my off-season stuff back into boxes and away, then keeping out all the current season ones in open shelving for me to see and plan outfits around. As much as keeping them in boxes is tidier and saves on space, I often forget to wear shoes if I do that. (However, as a note, storing shoes in their shoe boxes is much better for them than plastic storage boxes - it allows them to breath).

Ideally though, I'd love one of the Howards Storage World shoe libraries (though I'd need two of them to hold the entire shoe collection).

i've got a book shelf (5 etages... if you know what i mean? maybe like a closet, but without doors...), and it's perfect for my shoes! nearly every single pair fits in, and i can see them pretty good! but it doesn't safe a lot of room...

Mmm shoes. My poor selection of shoes live in a heap at the bottom or my wardrobe. This I absolutely despise. My goal for this year is to replace the pile of utter crap with a fabulous shoe wardrobe that is a) organised and b) visible and C) contains shoes that I actually love and wear. Thank you for the inspiration!

I don't know if you have the space, but I picked up a tall shoe rack from the Reject shop - it holds up to fifty pairs of shoes. So far it's been perfect for me, although boots won't fit on it. I find that rack has been the best way to store my shoes.

I tried the shoe box thing, but it doesn't work because it's a totally pain to get boxes out from underneath the others, and unless you go out and buy boxes to put the shoes in, the original boxes are really hard to stack because they aren't all the same sizes!

I store mine in these lovely stackable square shelves. It's like a tower of shoes between my two clothing racks. Seen here: http://instagr.am/p/G6V-NZsA54/

Shoes have always been a tricky item for me to store. Like you, I have a pretty serious collection, and they take up a lot of space. At the moment, they're in a jumble at the bottom of my new closet, which is less than ideal.

I find them particularly hard to store because they're all odd shapes- some heels, some flat, some wide, some narrow. If there were some degree of uniformity, they'd be easier to store (but then my collection would be a lot less awesome).

That looks like my fantasy shoe collection - where are the patent red ones from? And I like your shoe storage assistant, I have one too who seems to think her chief task is leaving fur all over black suede boots...
I cringe thinking about how mine are stored, all piled on top of each other in a bookcase. It will all be different WHEN I MOVE HOUSE!!!

Baby Cat! I LOVE her.

You HAVE to check out my two foster babies. They are both 4 weeks old. Maybe Baby Cat would like a friend??

I've never been good at getting rid of old shoes that I've loved either.

Currently mine are in boxes and then stacked in seasons. I've always liked the idea of taking pictures to put on the boxes.

Although if I owned those fabulous red booties of yours they would be on show. They look like happy shoes!!

Hmmmmm. I have some shoes in a fabric storage rack inside the closet. I have a tall metal/wire shelf only about 12 x 12 in depth/width but about 6 feet tall that holds quite a few pairs, and I have boots on the floor and hanging from shoe clips attached to the shelf. Then there are those strewn around the apartment and in the basket by the door...

Lovely pictures, as always!

I've just discovered your blog and I have to say, it's full of vintage goodness! I totally want to live in your closet. ^__^

I keep mine much the same as yours - just a little messier ;-P They're under my dress rack in an ever expanding pile...Well - they're matched etc - just the space under the rack isn't enough to hold them all.

So many pretty shoes!! I divide mine by season (fall/winter and spring/summer). I keep the ones from the season it is NOT in a cloth hanging shoe rack, and I keep the shoes of the season it IS on shoe racks under my cloths like just like yours!

Your kitty is so cute, too! :)

Your cat is SOOOO cute and fluffy! My shoe situation is getting ridiculous - picture yours, but with the floor space in the wardrobe covered with shoes as well! Ooops. I'm going to try one of those fabric over the door storage things just to see if I can clear some space to stand!

RE: shoeboxes with pictures - how great would it be to have that program Cher uses in Clueless? Still not sure why that isn't real life yet!

Oh dear, I'm in the same boat you are! I'm in desperate need of new ways to keep my shoe collection organized...if you find any helpful hints, be sure to post them!

Babycat is gorgeous! How old is she?

I keep my shoes at the bottom of my wardrobe, but am running out of room. I'm considering getting one of those calico hangers to put on the back inside of my wardrobe door, for extra room. Also I recently discovered that a work colleague has a bookshelf in her office with a whole shelf dedicated to shoes, so that she has the option of changing into mad-dash shoes or more formal shoes/after work shoes. Sounds sensible to me!!

My shoes are tossed into the bottom of my closet....which is not a great way to see what is where. I'm hoping to add some shelves like you have. Though, I won't need quite so many ;p

You have so many great shoes! I can never really handle heels, but I wouldn't a collection like yours. I store my shoes in an organizer, it's not glamorous, but it gets the job done. Also - beautiful kitty! x

Can I just say first up that you have a very clean, tidy and organised wardrobe and lots of delightful clothes and shoes. I think my closet looks like that when I first move into a new place and then lasts a couple of week before it becomes chaos. It then takes a spring clean to get it back into any type of order.

So, since I have recently moved into a new apartment, my wardrobe has still remained somewhat organised. I have a similar set up. My staple shoes (the ones that I wear on a weekly or fortnightly basis) are stored openly at the bottom of my wardrobe underneath my clothes. The occasional and dress up shoe are stored in boxes on the shelves that are within my wardrobe.

I find this a pretty easy way to access and keep my shoes in a neat and tidy manner.

At the moment all my shoes are chucked in the bathtub (redecorating hell). When I'm not in the process of removing woodchip wallpaper from every wall and ceiling in my entire house they tend to live chucked on top of the wardrobe or piled inside so the wolf can't eat them. But once the house is done, oooh, I have grand plans involving picture rails and hanging my shoes on the wall (comme ca)

I have a ...sizeable selection of heels as well. Mine live two rows deep at at the bottom of my closet. Unfortunately, they take up slightly too much room that way... they could use a shelf like yours!

oh God. I have the same problem. And I wish I had a good solution...

Especially when there's no closet space. MMmmmMmmm sheesh. Share with us if you find anything good!

Is there room for a shelf above your clothes? I'm very big on utilizing every inch of space, and my shoes are going to be stored on high shelving in my closet, right up by the ceiling. It's not built yet, but will be soon! Then the shoes will be pretty maids all in a row :)

All of my shoes are carelessly thrown into a giant plastic tub. Or under the bed. Since I mostly own flat boots, trainers, ballet shoes & Converse I don't regard this as a problem ;)

Lynn Brooks said...

umm, i'm a hot mess. I do have an over the door cloth thingy that holds about 20 pairs, a few racks in my closet for sneakers and flip-flops, and boots on the floor under the clothing racks. I too hold onto my shoes for too long, i'm afraid the minute i let a pair go i'll suddenly need them for something. I need an extra room that I can just turn into a big walk-in closet.

I love looking at the different ways people store their clothes/shoes? I have the most awkward wardrobe ever which holds a couple of pairs of shoes, but most are in a chest down in the hallway. However I a new wardrobe built for me in a month or so, which I'm super excited about and will hopefully have a lot more shoe space!!

Oh I have shoes everywhere! I (allegedly) have too many pairs, but that's nonsense. I have shelves in two wardrobes of shoes, and then have more shoes on a shoe rack in another wardrobe...and a few pairs in boxes on top of a wardrobe. Well, maybe after saying all that I do have too many shoes..

So many shoes! So much fabulousness!

So many shoes. So pretty! Oh...my poor shoes are all unceremoniously stored in a big plastic box under my bed. Sigh. I would love a bigger space to store them nicely...one day! I'm bad at getting rid of shoes. I could have shoes that I've NEVER worn but I won't get rid of them. Just in case, you know?

keep my expensive shoes in their original boxes and store them on top of my closet shelf. The less expensive shoes, including my runners, are kept in a fabulous shoe cupboard made by IKEA.

ah, storing shoes is always tricky. i have two of those fabric shoe door hanger things - i'm sure it has a name, but i can't think of it at the moment!

you have a lovely collection!

I store mine in clear stackable plastic boxes that open on the side, so it's easy to grab a pair even if the box at the bottom of the stack. I also keep them outside my room since it's really easy to create shoe clutter!

Fashionista said...

Ahhhh shoe storage and the never ending search for the perfect storage solution. Inspired by Suzi'z Ikea comment I just googled them, I would need a minimum of 10 cabinets, perhaps not quite practical for me at the moment(although it did invoke fabulous fantasies of a dressing room). In the meantime they are all in boxes stacked below skirts/jackets/blouses in the wardrobe.

Babycaaaaaat! Too cute, give her a cuddle from me.

My shoes used to all live under my bed but they got really dusty which was uncool, so now the grungy everyone ones (ankle boots, creepers) live there for ease of access, most of the rest live in the built in wardrobe on the shelf above the rails and the tall boots live underneath the hanging clothes. I had to do a big purge to fit them in to this space!

My mother keeps her shoes in clear plastic boxes (a FEW are doubled up in those boxes, but there are at least 100 boxes) in a hidden closet under our stairs. She also has one of those cloth hang-up sleeves that go in a closet, which is in our coat closet and holds about 12 pairs of flats. I have one in my closet but I use it for sweaters, scarves, gloves, etc. When I lived in a tiny cottage and had no dresser it held my underwear and socks (you can't hang up EVERYTHING). Mom used to have boxes at the top of the closet but now they are a jumble at the bottom. We take our shoes off before/immediately after entering the house and there's always a few pairs floating around near the doors. House slippers are kept in a magazine rack.

She got me one of those "Shoes-Under"s but it's super flimsy and doesn't fit tall heels that well. Still, it's not bad for the price (which is CHEAP) and I'm using it. We also have an old IKEA CD tower which I never had enough CDs to fill, and have even less CDs now. It used to hold little curios and things as well. Now it holds my shoes- any that are under 4 inches will fit if I put one in normally and the other on it's side. It would be easier if I had smaller feet! Not just because of storage- my mother has feet a full size to size and half smaller than mine, and like I said, she has 100+ shoes!
