soft curls, dark rooms and matte lips

blue yellow vintage floral g Ok, so here is what is quite possibly my all time favourite lipstick. It's had some very stern competition, especially in the last six months, but because I had one a few years ago I've got kind of sentimental about it.

I'm talking about MAC's matte Lady Danger.

It is really, really hard to find in Melbourne. Only one place stocks it (or so a MAC counter girl told me), and it's not often in stock anyway. And, frankly, I think that the fact we pay so much for it in Australia (it's around $38ish) is ridiculous. That said, I just love the colour and the texture. It's the perfect orange-based red, without being too orange, and the matte finish is just so beautiful, I think. Especially for winter makeup. So glamorous!

blue yellow vintage floral a The story of how I got this one is lovely: earlier this year, I'd decided I just had to try and get one, and went to two MAC makeup counters, only to be disappointed. Later, at home, I was flicking between the MAC online shop, umming and ahh-ing over paying $50 for one lipstick, and my twitter page – and a tweet popped up: someone I follow was giving one away to the first person to respond to that tweet! And I was first! Good timing or what?! I was soooooo chuffed! (They've since closed their blog, otherwise I would have linked to it of course.)

blue yellow vintage floral b I couldn't wait to wear it, so here it is, from last Friday. The photos in my living room are from the late afternoon, when I was trying to pretend it wasn't completely dark in my house but of course it was. I'd had my hair in large-ish pin curls all day and we were going to our friends' house for dinner. As you can see, it was still pretty summery last Friday!

blue yellow vintage floral c The curls had worked quite well. You can see I had two in the top front section, as this was a lot quicker than what I've been doing lately, which is four longer, thinner ones in the top section. blue yellow vintage floral h Smiling at your lipstick makes it go on better, true fact! Maybe. blue yellow vintage floral e Two rolls in the front and I was ready! I'm SO happy to have my familiar lipstick again. I can't wait to wear it on cold days, with face powder, a hat, maybe a 1940s suit. And, with red hair..! blue yellow vintage floral f

Red hair?!
If you need another lipstick would it be cheaper for someone to buy one here in the uk to buy one & post it to you? If it is then I don't mind doing it ;0)

I agree it's a gorgeous coloured lippie, and it does look stunning on you!
orange-reds are my favourite, and i did kick myself for not buying Lady Danger a few years ago, in the days when i was still buying Mac. I boycott them now that they've resumed animal testing (something which they previously claimed, when it was the trendy thing to say, that they were SO anti...)

However, that got me onto the path of Illamasqua (firm, out & proud loud & clear non animal-testers ) and onto Ignite (uBer orange, yay) and Liable (orange-red).

Liable is my fav lipstick of all, and i get compliments on it pretty much every time i wear it (which is most of the summer). however, it has to be said, it has a pretty awful texture. i dont know what they were thinking there. BUT if you make sure to put a primer/lip balm/ chapstick on first, it's fine and at least it doesnt budge. at. all. (it's prettty dry).

Also, and i dont want to sound evangelical here about illamasqua, (even though i am a *little* bit obsessed), i recall they did some pretty impressive work lobbying the australian distributors last year, forcing them to lower the ridiculous price of illamasqua make up over there. i dont know what it costs now, or if it's still pricier than mac, but at least they're trying to help customers, and remaining loyal to their overall ethics, in the meantime. that's my sermon anyway, ill stop and conclude with - yay for orange- reds!
ps thats an excellent pin curl set you have there :-)

Isn't it an utterly joyful feeling when you find your perfect/favourite shade of lipstick? Mine is MAC's Russian Red (I tend to need a blue red, which this is on me). I'll be devoted to that lippie until the end of time.

Are you returning to red? When I first found your blog, your hair was red. Of course you look great with all colors, but I think I liked red best. Cute story about how you acquired the lipstick. It's a fab color!

Oh my gosh I can't even imagine that kind of price! It's like $14 here. You should have someone ship it to you from the US or somewhere, if you have that option, soooo much cheaper. It's one of my fave lipsticks to wear. But what good luck that you got one for free! How lovely. You look beautiful as always.

xo,
Em

Polly P : totally understand. The thing is that all ingredients in cosmetics will probably have been tested on animals at some point, so it can be hard to work out where to draw the line in who's good and who's not when it comes to this. Agree that Illamasqua has great rep, though! Love their blushers and would love to try more of their range.
And yep, so many of the good matte ones are SO dry! ;D
The price change has been great, it is now waaaaay cheaper than it was so it's a good time for me to get buying with them! I couldn't believe they managed it, we are so used to sky high prices here, so I'm chuffed!

haha not a sermon, I really appreciate the time you took to share your thoughts :) I love that that can happen here x

‪Jessica Cangiano‬ ; Ooooh love Russian Red! I can be so stubbornly attached to familiar favourites, but when I have tried others it has often been a good thing..!

‪Nadia M‬ : thanks! <3

‪Sarah Burford‬ oh beautiful! <3

‪Ava G‬ : thanks! Yes, will go back to red (I loved it too, but I want it a little lighter this time!) when having to do my regrowth every 9 minutes does my head in completely. I like that it is a classic colour but still bright! <3

‪Amia‬ : oh love Ruby Woo too! Forgot all about that one! <3

‪Emma Litton‬ : $14 ???!!! You guys are so lucky! :D That is about the price of a cheap high street teenage range store lipstick here! I think this explains why I am so loyal to my lipsticks (and other makeup), and tend to not try new brands and things to often...

‪Koronka‬ : it is Lime Crime's Retrofutrist, which is a great pink red, creamy but not shiny, and I love it! I think I was using Illamasqua's pink lip liner (Titania, something like that?) or maybe MAC's Cherry liner :) x

:-) I agree, but if i could just say for anyone who may be interested, that there is a big difference between ingredients that were tested long ago, and brands that engage in active testing in the present day. Mac, and all Estee Lauder products now, sadly, fall into that category. So, actually, the line as to who is good and who is not, isnt so hazy after all :-) It's such a shame. But at least there are great brands doing the good and still providing us with the fab colours we love (i hear great things about Natio, from your part of the waters. Any thoughts on them?) :)

I think you know that you look exactly the same as young Rita Hayworth (Rita Cansini) - amazing! http://weheartvintage.co/2013/04/23/a-16-year-old-rita-hayworth/

Lady Danger is also my favourite! I went into the Mac store once and asked for a vintage-y Bond girl red and this is what they gave me.

Once I walked into a Mac store and one of the staff made me try on Korean Candy since it matched my dress! It's my other red lipstick staple - almost like a sheerer version of Lady Danger.

Do you curl your hair when it's wet or dry. It looks so smooth, my hair always turns out frizzy : (

I just got back from Hong Kong, and the prices on makeup alone make the trip worth it, i think! I've found a great shade of red in Bobbi Brown's "red carpet".
